Entry Description
Downtown Improvements
Beginning in Greenfield
GREENFIELD, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), the City of Greenfield, and Milestone Contractors will soon begin a National Road Corridor improvement project in the downtown area.
The enhancements will include replacing the brick paver sidewalk and concrete curb along US 40/Main Street and State Road 9/State Street. The project also includes landscaping, bicycle racks, trash receptacles, benches, and lighting and signal poles.
Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 19, when crews from Milestone Contractors will begin excavating the existing brick pavers and concrete curb and sidewalk. Most of the excavation is expected to be done at night to minimize inconvenience and increase public safety; however, crews will still be doing other work during the day.
Work will begin on the north side of Main Street between State and Spring Streets. The project is expected to continue counter-clockwise around downtown following this general schedule:
- Spring Street to State Street (north side) – March 19 to end of March
- Main Street to North Street – end of March to mid April
- State Street to Pennsylvania Street – mid April to early May
- Main Street to South Street – early May to late May
- State Street to Spring Street (south side) – late May to mid June
- Remaining time will be used for installing benches, bicycle racks, trash receptacles and landscaping.
This schedule is for informational purposes only and is subject to change. INDOT, the City of Greenfield and Milestone Contractors will keep local businesses and residents informed of progress updates and schedule changes.
The project is expected to be complete by the end of June. Access to all property will be maintained through the project, as the entire sidewalk will not be removed. Only the decorative section next to the curb will be affected. Some curbside parking restrictions will be necessary, but nearby curbside parking will be available and the City of Greenfield provides public parking lots downtown.
INDOT awarded the project contract to Milestone in October 2011 based on its bid of $526,000—the lowest of five submitted. The City of Greenfield is responsible for funding 20% of the project, with the remainder coming from federal funds.
INDOT provides all of the program administration, contract letting and post-contractual Federal obligations for LPA (Local Public Agency) projects. This alleviates additional financial burdens for local communities and provides a means for all communities to participate in federal-aid funding.
