[ISP] Driver Flees Scene of Four Vehicle Crash

Entry Description

Vigo County—This morning at 7:58, Indiana State Police troopers responded to a multi-vehicle crash on US 40 approximately one mile east of Seelyville. The crash involved four vehicles, a driver who fled the scene and only minor injuries to one occupant.

Preliminary investigation revealed a Vigo County School Corporation bus was stopped in the right lane of westbound US 40 with the stop arm deployed to pick up a student. A black 2000 Audi driven by Shari Smith of Brazil, IN. was stopped next to the bus in the westbound passing lane and behind her was a 2004 Volvo driven by Kent Pettet of Indianapolis, IN. For an unknown reason, a white van then struck the Volvo in the rear, which forced the Volvo into the Audi. The driver of the white van put the vehicle in reverse and struck a Ford F-150 pickup driven by Damion Brown of Brazil, IN. The driver of the white van then put the vehicle in drive, accelerated forward striking the Volvo in the rear and again forcing it into the rear of the Audi. The driver of the white van fled the scene westbound on US 40.

The Audi and Volvo were drivable, but the F-150 sustained heavy front end damage and was towed from the scene. Total estimate of damages is $8-10,000 dollars. Damion Brown suffered internal pain and sought his own medical treatment.

The Putnamville Post had five troopers on the scene within one minute and after an extensive search of the area, the troopers were unable to locate the white van.

The Indiana State Police is currently seeking any information from the public that may help in identifying the white van and the male driver. The only description is a white van (possibly a Chevy Astro van) with an unknown male driver (believed to be a white male). The van could possibly have extensive front and rear end damage.

Anyone with information is urged to contact ISP Trooper Bill Bradbury at the Putnamville Post, 765-653-4114. Assisting Bradbury was ISP officers Sergeant Joe Watts, Troopers Mike Laney, Michael Taylor and Michael Featherling.
