End Date: 5/14/2012
Entry Description

Hammond, Lake County-Indiana State Police responded to a crash on I-80 east bound at Calumet Avenue, early this morning, that resulted in another crash.

At approximately 2:23 a.m., Trooper Marcus Gholson responded to a crash at the above location where a green 1999 Dodge pick-up, driven by Nathaniel Dross, 34 of Griffith, was entering I-80 east bound from north bound Calumet Avenue ramp when he hit a semi.  The semi, a black 2012 Freightliner pulling a box trailer, was driven by Paul Salowitz, 55 of Flint Michigan, had pulled off I-80 onto the outer shoulder for a few seconds when the Freightliner was hit by the pick-up.  Dross was wearing his seat belt and his air bag deployed.  Dross was taken to Munster Community Hospital with facial injuries.  Alcohol was a factor. Dross was taken to Lake County Jail and cited for Operating While Intoxicated and Unsafe Lane Movement.

During his investigation of the crash, Trooper Gholsonwas blocked the far right lane with all his emergency lights activated.  At approximately 3:15 a.m., Salowitz was speaking with Gholson standing outside the passenger window of Gholson’s police car when a green 1999 Chevrolet Express van, driven by Peter Humphries, 44 of Gary, who was in the far right lane swerved to the right to avoid Gholson’s police car.  Salowitz was able to jump away from the police car as Humphries van hit Gholson’s car knocking the side view mirror off and putting a dent in the passenger side door.  The van ran Salowitz’ foot over as he jumped away and then struck the rear bumper of Salowitz’ semi trailer still parked on the outer shoulder.

Salowitz was not injured.

Humphries was air lifted from the scene and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois with lower extremity injuries.

All lanes of I-80 east bound where closed off and on for reconstruction of the crash, removal of the injured and removal of the vehicles.  Traffic continued in the far left lane.  All lanes reopened at 7:15 a.m.
