Entry Description

Avilla, IN (Noble Co.)—The Indiana State Police is investigating an early morning crash that occurred after a man from Steuben County led Kendallville Police on a chase into the town of Avilla in eastern Noble County.

According to Trooper David Poe, at approximately 12:15 am, he had stopped a 2000 Pontiac 4-door on I-69 southbound in the area of the 140 mile marker for speeding and unsafe lane movement.  As Poe had made contact with the driver and was waiting for him to provide his driver’s license, the driver put the car in drive and sped away.

Poe pursued the vehicle south to US 6 and then west across US 6 into Noble County.  As the driver, later identified as Chad M. Schuch, 33 from rural Angola drove into Kendallville, Poe terminated the pursuit.  At approximately 1:30 am, the Kendallville Police Department located Schuch’s vehicle on County Road 1000 E, just south of Kendallville and as they attempted to initiate a traffic stop, Schuch once again sped away south toward Avilla.

Schuch drove his vehicle off of the roadway at the T-intersection of Miner Road and Albion Street in Avilla and struck a tree.  Schuch was pinned in his vehicle until extricated by the Avilla Fire Department, after which, he was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital with a broken leg.  He was not wearing his seatbelt and alcohol was believed to be a factor in this crash.  Agencies assisting were the Kendallville Police, Avilla Police, Noble County Sheriff and Avilla Fire Departments.
