[ISP] Driver Flees After Early Morning Crash on I-65
Start Date: 5/24/2012Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 5/24/2012End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description

Jackson County: An early morning crash closed I-65 southbound just north of Seymour.  According to Trooper Seth Davidson, this morning at approximately 12:15 a.m. a 2002 Jeep was stopped on the emergency strip on I-65 near the 50 mile marker when it pulled out in front of a southbound 2012 Peterbilt semi tractor-trailer rig.  The semi driver attempted to avoid the crash by steering hard to the left but struck the Jeep forcing it into the guardrail.  The semi also struck the guardrail as the trailer, loaded with Ford diesel engines, overturned and a rupture of the semi’s fuel tank resulted in a substantial diesel fuel spill along with a large amount of oil that escaped from the load of diesel engines.

The driver of the semi, 40 year old Markus E. Riker of Highland Heights, KY suffered multiple fractures and was transported to Schneck Memorial Hospital in Seymour and was later transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.  Injured in the Jeep were 29 year old Mildred Okumu, nine year old Nicole Okumu and five year old Jillian Okumu all of Grand Rapids, MI.  All were transported to Schneck Memorial Hospital in Seymour where they were treated and released for minor injuries.  Mildred Okumu told Tpr. Davidson the driver of the Jeep, whom she only knew by the name of “David,” fled the scene after the crash.  She told Tpr. Davidson she had hired David to drive her and her daughters to Georgia.

The crash caused southbound I-65 to be closed until approximately 5:00 a.m. this morning.  The crash remains under investigation and David has not been located.  Tpr. Davidson was assisted at the scene by other troopers, Seymour PD, Jackson-Washington Township Fire Department, Redding Fire Department, and Indiana Department of Transportation.
