Allisonville Road Bridge Closes

For 110 Days

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will close the Allisonville Road bridge over Interstate 465 on Wednesday, May 30 at 12:01 a.m. for approximately 110 days.  Traffic will not be permitted to cross the bridge, which restricts left turns to access I-465 and left turns when exiting to Allisonville Road.  Right turns on all ramps will remain open.

• New interchange configuration – The Allisonville Road bridge over I-465 is being reconstructed to form part of a new single-point urban interchange similar to the I-465 interchange with Emerson Avenue in Beech Grove.  Traffic signals at the top of entrance and exit ramps will be consolidated into one, improving traffic flow in all directions.  The new bridge will be eight lanes wide with three through lanes and two left-turn lanes in each direction.  Both sides of the bridge will also have bike lanes.  The planned design can be viewed at www.AllisonvilleRoad.com.

• Construction schedule – Walsh Construction, the state’s contractor for the $19 million project, expects to complete construction of the bridge in 110 days, barring abnormal weather or other unforeseen issues.  Walsh will receive incentives for each day they reopen the bridge earlier than the proposed 110 days.  Likewise, the contractor will be liable for monetary damages if the bridge is not reopened in 110 days.  Ramp and bridge construction will continue for a period of 25 days after the bridge reopens.

• Official detours and traffic mitigation – The official signed detour will use Keystone Avenue, 96^th Street, I-69 and 82^nd Street.  INDOT has also invested in improvements to signal timing and lane configurations on other routes to improve traffic flow during construction.  INDOT, the City of Indianapolis, the Town of Fishers and the City of Carmel will monitor and update traffic signal timing accordingly.

• Ramp accessibility during the bridge closure – The interchange ramps will not be closed on May 30, but access to and from the ramps will be limited due to the closure of the bridge.  Through traffic on Allisonville Road and left turns to access and exit I-465 will be prohibited during the bridge closure.  The southbound Allisonville Road entrance ramp to westbound I-465 and the northbound Allisonville  Road entrance ramp to eastbound I-465 are planned to be closed for 15 days this summer.  At all times during construction, I-465 eastbound traffic will have access to southbound Allisonville Road, and I-465 westbound traffic will have access to northbound Allisonville Road. 

• Building the bridge – INDOT evaluated several construction options, including building the bridge one half at a time.  The new bridge will be more than five feet higher than the existing bridge, and maintaining traffic while building one side at a time would have required nearly two years of construction.  INDOT decided it was better to close the bridge, accelerate construction and complete the project in less than half the time.  Closing the bridge also increases safety for drivers and construction workers.
