Entry Description

Clay County—At 1:21 this morning, Indiana State Police troopers and Clay County emergency agencies responded to a one-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 near the 25 mile marker. The crash resulted in critical injuries to the driver and the death of the passenger.

Preliminary investigation revealed a westbound 1993 Ford Bronco, driven by Daniel T. Franklin, age 52, of Lake Como, New Jersey, swerved abruptly to miss a deer and traveled off the south side of the roadway into the center wooded median. The Bronco then struck several trees and subsequently erupted in fire. A passerby, Sean L. Cruz of Indianapolis, along with other unnamed motorists, was able to cut the seatbelt away from Mr. Franklin and remove him from the vehicle during the fire. However, they were unable to free the passenger due to the flames and she was pronounced deceased at the scene by Clay County deputy coroner Amy Shelton.

Clay County Deputy Coroner Amy Shelton has identified the deceased as Mary J. Franklin, age 76, of Lake Como, New Jersey. The autopsy was performed at Terre Haute Regional Hospital by Dr. Roland Kohr and disclosed that Ms. Franklin died from blunt force trauma prior to the vehicle fire.

Daniel T. Franklin was airlifted by Air Evac helicopter to Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of life threatening multiple injuries including significant burns.

The crash was investigated by ISP Master Trooper Todd Brown. Assisting were ISP troopers Marcus Tow, Jonathan Cumbie, and Brian Thomas; Clay County Sheriff’s deputy John Tilley, Trans Care Ambulance Service, Posey Township and Jackson Township fire departments.

Alcohol and drugs are believed to not be a factor in the crash.

Under the Law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
