Travel Safely This Thanksgiving Weekend

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces a road work moratorium beginning Wednesday afternoon, November 21st until the morning hours of Monday, November 26th to increase motorists’ mobility and safety during the holiday weekend.

INDOT has a policy of opening as many traffic lanes as possible to the motoring public in advance of the influx of holiday travelers.  Contractors stop work in construction zones.  Truck traffic in and out of project areas ceases.  Wherever possible, road restrictions will be removed.  Some closures and restrictions will remain on projects that cannot safely reopen to traffic.

INDOT urges holiday motorists to please make the Thanksgiving holiday travel period safe by observing the following safety rules:

• If you are planning to travel make sure you are well rested, a fatigued driver is a dangerous driver.
• Avoid tailgating; remember the two-second rule.
• Make sure everyone is buckled up.
• Put down the electronic devices and keep your attention on driving.
• MOVE OVER, SLOW DOWN for emergency and highway service vehicles.

For up-to-date information on traffic conditions, road closures, construction information and crashes, visit or call 1-800-261-ROAD (7623).  TrafficWise also includes real-time traffic data and camera views of traffic conditions in the Indianapolis metropolitan area.  This information enables motorists to review current traffic conditions on freeways before leaving.

Traffic and restriction updates can also be obtained on Facebook and Twitter.  For links, go to
