Indiana Team Returns from East Coast Deployment
IMAT Managed Incident and Coordinated Volunteers and Donations
The Incident Management Assistance Team (IMAT) deployed November 11 returned from the East Coast and Hurricane Sandy on November 24.
The IMAT, consisting of almost 40 staff, was the second deployment from Indiana. The team replaced the existing IMAT in the City of Long Beach, and then divided into two groups. One helped manage the incident while the other assisted with donation and volunteer coordination.
Indiana was one of the first, if not the first, states to answer calls for help from the East Coast in response to Hurricane Sandy and the Nor’easter that devastated the region.
Indiana swiftly mobilized and deployed the contingent of responders to answer East Coast requests for assistance. The IDHS led Emergency Operations Center and Indiana’s unique district concept facilitated this rapid deployment, as well as the second contingent’s deployment.
Team members included public safety professionals from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS), Indiana University, IDHS Districts 1, 2, 5, 8, 9 and 10, Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Indiana State Police. The IMAT's mission was to support local officials in preserving the safety of the public and emergency responders, while providing for the protection of property and the community environment.
