I-74 Restrictions Begin Monday
For Cable Barrier Installation
MARION COUNTY – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to install median cable barrier on I-74 west of Indianapolis beginning Monday, December 10.
Installation of the cable barrier system will require left lane restrictions on I-74 in both directions between I-465 and Dandy Trail. Eastbound lane restrictions should be expected between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Westbound restrictions should be expected between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Walsh Construction, the state’s contractor, expects installation of the cable barriers to be complete in approximately two weeks.
Cable barrier systems are lines of highly tensioned cables between anchored posts in the medians of roads. They are designed to control cross-median crashes, which produce half of all severe-outcome accidents and nearly two-thirds of fatal crashes nationwide. When applied correctly, cable barriers can be a cost-effective system to reduce the frequency and severity of cross-median collisions and save lives.
Since INDOT began the program in 2005, cable barriers have been installed in a majority of the 60-foot-wide grassy medians on Indiana’s rural interstates. |
