[REP CAUCUS] Interim Study Committees Announced
Start Date: 5/23/2013 All Day
End Date: 5/23/2013
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE - Today the Legislative Council met to assign topics for the Indiana General Assembly to study during the 2013 interim period.  Every year, after the legislative session is completed, the Legislative Council meets to assign topics to study during the interim as well as establish any new interim committees that are needed to examine particular issues.

The Legislative Council is composed of twelve voting members, with six appointed from the Senate by the Chairman of the Council, and six appointed members from the House by the Vice-Chairman of the Council.  Speaker Brian C. Bosma (R-Indianapolis) serves as the Vice Chairman of the Legislative Council.

“We addressed numerous issues during the 2013 legislative session, but the General Assembly thought it best to take additional time and study in depth some of the legislation before we decide to make any changes to our state’s policy. We realize that every bill passed in the state legislature has a direct effect on Hoosiers, and it is important that we not make any rash decisions. It’s prudent to take a thoughtful approach to legislation,” said Speaker Bosma.

These committees will lay the groundwork for much of the legislation to come before the General Assembly during the 2014 legislative session. The following is an example of some of the issues that the interim committees and commissions will examine during the summer and fall:

  • Common Core Educational Standards;
  • Develop best practices for a school resource officer to employ in order to improve school safety;
  • Issues addressing the safety and status of children in Indiana; and
  • Evaluation of Indiana’s Criminal Law and Sentencing Policy.

“As I have always said, the committees serve as the work horses of the institution. I look forward to seeing the recommendations that come from these study committees,” said Speaker Bosma.

To see a complete list of the assigned committees and what they are charged with studying please see the attached document.
