Entry Description

Jasper County-Indiana State Police Senior Trooper Martin Benner responded to a two vehicle crash on I-65 northbound at the 225 ½ mile marker (this is 4 ½ miles south of the Demotte/Roselawn exit) this morning that resulted in a husband and wife being airlifted from the scene.

Preliminary investigation revealed, that approximately 9:52 A.M., a black 2013 SRX Cadillac was north in the left lane when the driver saw a blue 2003 GMC Sierra pick-up coming up fast behind him. The driver began to move into the right lane to yield to the approaching Sierra when he saw the GMC pick-up veer to the right, leave the roadway, go into the grass on the east side, come back onto the roadway in front of the Cadillac (who is in the right lane) enter into the left lane and hit a white 1994 GMC Sierra pick-up. The Cadillac was not hit.

The white GMC Sierra, driven by Brenda D. Starks, 53 of Marion, Alabama, after being hit veered off the roadway onto the paved median and struck the concrete median barrier wall head on. The Stark’s GMC pick-up then spun around striking the barrier wall with the pick-up’s rear, it then spun back hitting it again with the front; it came to a final rest up against the concrete barrier wall.

The driver of the blue 2003 Sierra pick-up, Johnny Kurowsky, 66 of Demotte, Indiana, was able to gain control of his vehicle and came to rest on the outer shoulder.

Kurowsky sustained minor injury and did not go to the hospital. Brenda Starks and her passenger (husband) Albert Starks Junior, age 68 were both airlifted from the scene and taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for non-life threatening injuries.

I-65 was closed for a period for the landing of the air ambulance helicopters.
