[IDEM] Ten child care facilities earn praise for cleaner, safer environments
Start Date: 1/25/2013
End Date: 1/25/2013
Entry Description

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) this month is celebrating ten Indiana child care facilities that have joined or are renewing their membership in Indiana’s Five Star Recognition Program for Child Care Facilities. Participants in the “Five Star” program voluntarily take measures above and beyond the minimum requirements to reduce and eliminate hazards that can cause permanent, long-term developmental problems in young children.

The new Five Star facilities are:

Henry County

Mine, Yours, and Ours, Middletown (5 stars)

Marion County

Promiseland Adventures, Indianapolis (1 star)

Renewing Five Star facilities are:

Brown County

Lori’s Ton o’ Fun Daycare, Morgantown, 3 sites (1 star)

Delaware County

Precious Little Angels, Albany (5 stars)

Monroe County

Campus View Child Care Center, Bloomington (5 stars)

Vanderburgh County

St. Vincent Center for Children and Families, Evansville (5 stars)

Washington County

Karen’s Kidz Daycare, Pekin, 2 sites (5 stars)

Children are more affected by pollution than adults because their organs are still developing, they are smaller, and they may be exposed to additional environmental threats as they play and explore their world. “The owners, teachers and staff of Indiana’s Five Star child care programs can be proud of their work to provide cleaner, safer environments for the children in their care,” said Thomas Easterly, IDEM commissioner.

Applicants to the Five Star program receive a free lead risk assessment, radon test, on-site confidential assistance, and no-idling signs. Participants earn one, three or five stars based on the measures they implement to manage environmental health issues and reduce children’s exposure to mercury, lead hazards, mold, asbestos, radon, pesticides, carbon monoxide, and PCBs. Many Five Star members have started recycling programs, developed formal written plans for chemical management, reduced energy usage, and implemented no-idling zones. Membership in the program is reevaluated every two years.

More than 5,500 Hoosier children attend Five Star child care facilities. For information about the Five Star program, including a list of participating facilities, visit IDEM’s website at www.idem.IN.gov/4180.htm. For membership information, child care facilities can contact Karen Teliha, IDEM’s Community and Environmental Health Coordinator, at (800) 451-6027.

The public is reminded to test for radon each January during National Radon Action Month. For information, visit the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s website at www.epa.gov/radon/nram/.
