Entry Description

STATEHOUSE – State Representative Ben Smaltz (R-Auburn) and other House legislators and staff wore sneakers at the Statehouse today in support of the “Suits and Sneakers” challenge to promote awareness of the fight against cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, last year 35,000 Hoosiers heard the words “you have cancer,” and of those, 13,000 lost their lives to the disease. Suits and Sneakers is a program sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches to help raise cancer awareness and support those affected by it.

“Tragically, most Hoosiers have either experienced cancer or personally know someone who has been affected by cancer,” said Rep. Smaltz. “I have lost loved ones to this disease and have helplessly watched other people, close to me, struggle. I am grateful for an opportunity to do something that can help. I hope that by participating in the Suits and Sneakers challenge, we have raised awareness and someday a cure for all cancer will be found.”

Coach Greg Lansing of Indiana State University men’s basketball team represented all Indiana college basketball coaches during his visit to the Statehouse. He encouraged House members and staff to continue to raise awareness on ways to reduce the risk of cancer. These include eating right, exercising, making healthy lifestyle choices and following the American Cancer Society's recommended cancer screening guidelines.

“I would like to thank all of the collegiate coaches in Indiana and nationwide who took part in this challenge for their continued efforts to raise awareness and to remind their fellow Hoosiers that in their fight against cancer, they are not alone,” said Rep. Smaltz. “It is easy to feel helpless when it comes to such a tough battle, but these coaches have proven that a little effort can go a long way.”
