Rep. Frizzell supports financial literacy in schools

STATEHOUSE – State Representative Dave Frizzell (R-Indianapolis) joined State Senator Brent Waltz (R-Greenwood)  and Chair of the Senate Committee on Education and Career Development State Senator Dennis Kruse (R-Auburn) during a press conference yesterday in support of Senate Bill (SB) 418 focusing on financial literacy instruction.

SB 418, authored by Sen. Waltz, requires that financial literacy instruction is given in grades 6-12 in all public, charter and accredited nonpublic schools. It also establishes a task force to create guidelines for a financial literacy curriculum and a state resource program. Rep. Frizzell has agreed to sponsor the bill in the House upon passage from the Senate.

“Students should leave high school knowing the basics on how to manage their personal finances,” Rep. Frizzell said. “Knowing how to budget their income, responsibly use a credit card and invest for the future are skills that all Hoosiers need. Not only will it benefit the students who learn these skills, but it will also give our economy an extra boost to have an increase of fiscally responsible people.”

Building on legislation passed in 2010, SB 418 creates a task force to give educators a reference guide for topics that need to be addressed. The task force will consist of both educators and financial professionals, ensuring that a well-rounded, comprehensive curriculum is crafted.

Schools will be eligible to receive assistance implementing these programs from the Financial Literacy Grant Fund, which consists of monies from private entities as well as General Assembly appropriations.

“I’m happy to be a part of this process,” said Rep. Frizzell. “I’m focused on fiscal responsibility, and this piece of legislation ties in well with our goals for Indiana. If this bill passes out of the Senate, I’m ready to support it in the House and move toward giving young Hoosiers the chance to start their adult lives with necessary financial understanding.”

State Rep. Dave Frizzell serves as the Majority Whip for the House. He also serves on the Family Children and Human Affairs Committee, the Public Health Committee and the Utilities and Energy Committee.  Rep. Frizzell represents a portions of Marion and Johnson counties.
