Vigo County—This morning at 1:40, Indiana State Police Trooper Brian Thomas observed a black 2002 Volkswagon Jetta traveling eastbound on Cherry Street near 7th Street. The Jetta was stopped for traveling eastbound on the one-way westbound Cherry Street. During the traffic stop, the driver was evasive about ownership of the vehicle and appeared intoxicated. Trooper Thomas arrested the driver, Gage M. Wilson, age 21, of Rossville, Illinois for DUI (.21% BAC) and incarcerated him in the Vigo County Jail. The Jetta was impounded for further investigation.

Minutes later, Terre Haute Police Department officers contacted the Indiana State Police and reported they were taking a stolen vehicle report on a black 2002 Volkswagon Jetta taken from the Terminal Sports Bar parking lot near 9th and Wabash Streets in downtown Terre Haute.

The keys to the Jetta were locked in the ignition because of a malfunction. Officers believe Gage M. Wilson happened upon the vehicle, spotted the keys in the ignition, and drove away only to be stopped for traffic violation minutes later. The traffic stop was approximately two blocks from where the vehicle was stolen.

The stolen vehicle investigation is being conducted by the Terre Haute Police Department and questions concerning the vehicle should be directed to the THPD.

Under the law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
