Entry Description

Check out the Statehouse!

This past week was the beginning of Lieutenant Governor Ellspermann’s first week in office. I was able to be at the inauguration ceremony when she was sworn into office, a great moment for our community and state. Sue and I met over the summer, and she struck me as a person with a passion for helping others.

When she was first elected to the Indiana Legislature, she brought a wealth of education and private sector background. I do not think many of us were shocked when Governor Pence selected her as his running mate after seeing how hard she worked to represent our district. She ran a great campaign – always reminding people of where she was from and how proud she was of her small-town roots – focused on the issues that matter most to Hoosiers and what her vision was for the state moving forward.

All the work Sue had done as a state representative, and then as a candidate for Lt. Governor, culminated in Monday’s inaugural events. Indiana is heading into a new era of leadership under Gov. Pence and Lt. Gov. Ellspermann, and I am excited to see it firsthand from my desk in the House.

As we work together for the people of Indiana, your continued involvement and excitement in state government is always welcomed. The Indiana House Page Program is a great reason to come check out the Statehouse with your children. The program is available to students who are 13 to 18 years old. Pages get to check out the Capitol, the governor’s office and see how the General Assembly works during a day of session.

The Senate and House have separate chambers; both are very interesting in their layout and the history is fantastic because the building has been around since 1888. Indiana’s Supreme Court is also a place full of history and certainly worth a visit. The justices are in session, and it is a unique experience to watch them determine the outcomes of some high profile cases.

When a student is a page, he or she gets the chance to witness floor sessions, committee meetings and help legislators with the daily activities. Students who serve as pages are excused from school for the day. A page is responsible for the transportation to and from the Statehouse, so it is a great excuse for you to take a day trip to Indy. Come stop by my office, and we can catch up on how things are going.

If you have a student who is interested then check your calendars soon, I’m told these spots fill up fast. Have two different dates ready for when they can come to the Statehouse between now and April. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays are the best days to serve because that is when the House is in session. There are no pages on Fridays. To sign up, visit www.in.gov/legislative/house_republicans/off_cms/page or call 1-800-382-9841.

I think the page program is a great experience for students that offer a unique opportunity for students to see their classwork come to life. I hope that students in our community take advantage of this opportunity to visit the Statehouse and see how their state government works.
