Hume bill to expand job opportunities for medically-trained veterans

INDIANAPOLIS—The Senate unanimously approved a proposal from State Senator Lindel Hume (D-Princeton) that would allow medically-trained military personnel to be certified as emergency medical providers. 

Senate Bill (SB) 290 would give the Indiana Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Commission the ability to issue licenses to military service applicants who had prior training in medical service fields. They must also pass testing requirements to qualify for the certification.

“The veteran unemployment rate is significantly higher than Indiana’s overall rate,” Sen. Hume said. “This bill would give those who have sacrificed and served our county the opportunity to seek jobs as soon as possible without having to duplicate training.”

Through SB 290, the commission would be permitted to also issue temporary licenses for applicants needing to complete additional training.

After unanimously passing out of both the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and the full Senate, SB 290 will move to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
