Entry Description

STATEHOUSE — State Representative Dick Hamm (R-Richmond) authored legislation regarding write-in candidates, which passed the Indiana House of Representatives on Tuesday with an 88-9 vote. The bill is coauthored by State Representative Bob Cherry (R-Greenfield).

House Bill 1112 clarifies current election law in regards to write-in candidates. The bill states that there may only be one eligible candidate per political party in a given general election.

“HB 1112 gives all major and minor parties the ability to accurately choose candidates that represent their interests by protecting their individual nominating processes,” said Rep. Hamm.

“This bill encourages politically aligned candidates to run in their respective parties as opposed to participating in a write-in candidacy,” said Rep. Cherry. “HB 1112 protects the choices of voters and prohibits election fraud.”

HB 1112 will move to the Senate for further discussion and debate. The Senate sponsor for the bill is Sen. Allen Paul (R-Richmond).
