Entry Description

Shifting Gears at the Statehouse

The first half of the 2013 session has gone by at what seems to be warp-speed. The Indiana House of Representatives sent 175 bills to the Senate for review and we have received more than 216 bills from the Senate to assign to committees and start debating and discussing.

So far, this legislative session in the House has focused on the bills proposed by my fellow representatives – and a few from me. They were discussed and debated in committee, amended, voted on by the whole House and, if passed, were sent on to the Senate. Many of the bills we have been working on since January focused on our House Republican agenda which lists our priorities of:  jobs, education and fiscal integrity emphasizing a balanced budget. Each representative also has bills concentrated on the welfare of their community.

One bill in particular is directly helpful to our community.  Senate Bill (SB) 319 was signed into law today by Governor Pence.  The bill will help the farmers of district 25 keep their taxes in line with the productivity of the soil.  Fast-tracking this bill through both sides of legislation allows it to be enacted into the lives of Hoosiers quickly so they do not suffer dramatic tax increases for this year.

Our time now is going to be spent on working on the Senate bills that come across our desks over the next couple months.  The fine-tuning done by the General Assembly allows each bill to become the best piece of legislation for Hoosiers.  The more research, time and effort put into lawmaking, the better the outcome.  The Senators across the hall will be doing the same work on the House bills they are receiving and together we will shape laws that will benefit Hoosiers for many years to come.

Each session we focus on key issues and this year is no different.  Passing a balanced budget has been our main focus so far, and I think the proposed budget we sent to the Senate this week is on the right track. Creating jobs for Hoosiers, improving our education system and ensuring economic stability and growth for our state are just a few of the other goals we intend to continue reaching for during the second half of session.

My hope is the legislation passed this session will continue to improve our state’s already thriving condition and that our communities will feel the positive impact we have made through our lawmaking. As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns or comments. I can be reached by email at h25@in.gov or by phone at 317-234-2993.
