INDOT Hosting Open House for
New U.S. 31 Hamilton County

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is hosting a public open house to present updated timeline, design and construction plans for The New U.S. 31 Hamilton County project.

The open house will be held in the Westfield Middle School cafeteria, located at 345 W. Hoover Street, on Tuesday, March 12 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.  A formal presentation will start at 6:00 p.m.  The open house format allows community members an opportunity to speak one-on-one with INDOT representatives and project team members.

INDOT recently awarded a $58.4 million contract for The New U.S. 31 Hamilton County project between 146^th Street and 169^th Street, including new freeway exits at 146^th, 151^st and 161^st streets. The bid submitted by Rieth-Riley Construction of Goshen was the lowest among five contractors and nearly $5 million below engineers’ cost estimates.

New ramps will connect 146^th Street to the north with Greyhound Pass and 151^st Street with a “split-diamond” interchange. A new freeway exit at 161^st Street will have roundabouts controlling ramp and cross traffic. Local traffic on Union Street and 156^th Street will pass under U.S. 31 with no on or off ramps.

U.S. 31 will remain two lanes in each direction during peak times, with traffic shifts and temporary intersection closures helping to expedite construction while maintaining as much access as possible. Temporary closures at Greyhound Pass, 151^st Street and 161^st Street will be necessary, but the closures will be sequenced to minimize any inconvenience to residents, businesses and motorists.  All construction and maintenance of traffic details will be included in the presentation.
