Agriculture Appreciation Month

The month of March brings with it a few notable celebrations.  Saint Patrick’s Day, March Madness and American Red Cross Month are a few that come to mind.  What you might not know is that this month is also Agriculture Appreciation Month here in Indiana.  Governor Pence declared March as Agriculture Appreciation Month, stemming from an extension of National Agriculture Day which falls on March 19 this year. Here at the Statehouse, we are joining with the Indiana’s Family of Farmers (IFoF) and Indiana Humanities to kick off the month-long celebration.

The IFoF brings together a coalition of more than a dozen agriculture-related organizations to sponsor the starting events at the Statehouse.  Joining forces with the General Assembly, they are recognizing the many significant economic and cultural contributions agriculture makes to Indiana.  Starting Tuesday with a Statehouse reception, Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann announced the winners of the Ag Essay Contest and the Indiana National FFA Organization state president, Cameron Mann, read the official governor’s proclamation.  The day continued with food trucks from the Indianapolis area traveling to the Statehouse to present their local cuisine to the public.

The culmination of the events provided a great starting off point for the Hoosiers of the Indianapolis area to support agriculture.  For those Hoosiers who live in a congested urban area, like Indianapolis, the thought of having agriculture celebrated and encouraged is something not often thought of, but it is a critical part of our state’s economy and well-being.

I love our corner of the world and enjoy driving by the miles of farmland in our district.  It always reminds me that our community is doing its part in contributing to the growth of Indiana and feeding Hoosiers.  Participating in the celebration of what our community does best allows me to really see the effect that agriculture has not only on the state of Indiana, but the country as a whole.

Many great things have come from Indiana like Hoosier basketball, Hoosier hospitality and Hoosier racing.  What many of us fail to realize is Hoosier agriculture is one of the biggest things we have to be proud of.  Governor Pence led us in the right direction by declaring the entire month of March to be in celebration and support of the contributions agriculture makes to our state.
