[ISP] Investigation Leads to 11 Felony Charges and 2 Arrests

Entry Description

Peru – Recently, a five month long prescription fraud investigation by Indiana State Police Detective Josh Maller resulted in the arrests of Gypsy Shelton, 36, Lagro, IN and Emily Felton, 23, Marion, IN. The pair faces a combined total of 11 felony charges in three different counties.

Detective Maller started the investigation after a Marion, IN lady reported to a local pharmacy that someone was illegally obtaining prescription medication utilizing her name. The pharmacy reported the alleged crime to the Indiana State Police.

Further investigation revealed that Shelton, who was working as a medical assistant for Dukes Medical Group in Peru, IN, allegedly called in or wrote fraudulent prescriptions for the controlled substance Lortab. She purportedly utilized the names of family members and friends as she ordered fraudulent prescriptions at pharmacies in Wabash and Miami Counties.

Shelton was arrested on a Miami Superior Court II arrest warrant to face felony charges for conspiracy to commit dealing in a scheduled III controlled substance, obtaining a controlled substance by fraud or deceit, and forgery of prescription for legend drugs. She was also served a Wabash Superior Court arrest warrant alleging felony counts of forgery of prescription for legend drugs (two counts) and obtaining a controlled substance by fraud or deceit (two counts). She has since bonded out of jail on both warrants.

Felton allegedly picked up the illegal prescriptions ordered by Shelton. Felton was purportedly given some of the Lortab for having picked up the drugs. She is alleged to have picked up illegal prescriptions in Wabash, Grant, and Miami Counties. Felton is currently incarcerated in the Wabash County Jail on a Wabash Superior Court arrest warrant alleging two felony charges for obtaining a controlled substance by fraud or deceit. She was also served a Miami Circuit Court arrest warrant for a felony charge of conspiracy to commit dealing in a schedule III controlled substance. She also faces a felony arrest warrant from Grant County on a single count of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud or deceit.

After she completes her criminal case in Wabash County, she will be extradited to Grant and Miami Counties to face charges.

All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law
