[INDOT] I-65 Northbound Reopens from Edinburgh to Whiteland

Entry Description

I-65 Northbound Reopens from Edinburgh to Whiteland

Drivers Urged to Use Caution and a Slow, Steady Speed

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. – Northbound I-65 has reopened to traffic between U.S. 31 at Edinburgh (Exit 76) and Whiteland (Exit 95). But Northern Bartholomew and Southern Johnson counties continue to have fair to difficult road conditions, and local authorities have declared a travel watch limiting travel to essential or emergency purposes.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and Indiana State Police (ISP) urge drivers to use extreme caution and drive I-65 at a slow, steady speed. Authorities will reevaluate conditions after the sun sets and may need to re-close I-65 should conditions deteriorate.

INDOT’s yellow plow trucks took advantage of the closure, which began early this morning, to plow repeatedly and use anti-icing chemicals to break up ice and hard-packed snow. By opening the highway at this state, it is expected that traffic will help continue this process. Forecasted warmer temperatures on Wednesday will make it easier for salt and other anti-icing chemicals to lower the temperature at which the snow and ice melt.

ISP and other law enforcement agencies encourage the public to help keep their phone lines open for emergencies and to access road conditions at http://indot.carsprogram.org/ or by dialing toll-free 800-261-ROAD (7623). To see an updated map of travel advisories provided by each county’s emergency management agency, visit www.in.gov/dhs/traveladvisory.
