[DNR] Guided hike to fossil beds at Monroe Lake, Feb. 1
Start Date: 2/1/2014Start Time: 1:00 PM
End Date: 2/1/2014
Entry Description
The public can join Monroe Lake naturalist Jill Vance on a hike to the fossil beds on the Allens Creek State Recreation Area peninsula on Saturday, Feb. 1.

The free hike starts at 1 p.m. and takes roughly three hours, covering a distance of about 4 miles over moderate terrain to the fossil exposure and back.

“This is easily the most popular program that I offer,” Vance said. “It always fills, so I recommend registering early.”

The limestone beds are so densely packed with fossils that finding “plain” rock is difficult. Vance will share the larger geological story of the fossils on the hike.

The hike is limited to 20 people. Registration is required by Jan. 28 by emailing jvance@dnr.IN.gov with your name, phone number, and the number of people in your group.

Directions to Allens Creek SRA on S.R. 446 will be provided upon registration.

Due to the length and content of the hike, Vance recommends it for ages 16 and older.
