[r29] Rep. Richardson supports Suits and Sneakers to raise awareness of the fight against cancer

Entry Description
Rep. Richardson supports Suits and Sneakers to raise awareness of the fight against cancer

STATEHOUSE — State Representative Kathy Kreag Richardson (R-Noblesville) and House legislators and staff wore sneakers at the Statehouse on Thursday in support of the Suits and Sneakers challenge to help raise awareness about cancer and the importance that nutrition and physical activity play in reducing one's risk of the disease.

The American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Challenge is an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches to help raise cancer awareness and support those affected by it.

“The Suits and Sneakers Challenge is a very creative way to help raise awareness and support for the fight against cancer,” said Rep. Richardson. “We’ve all been affected by cancer in some way or another, and it is great to see organizations like the American Cancer Society doing so much to fight this terrible affliction. I am proud to join my fellow legislators and staff in supporting this noble cause.”

Wearing sneakers is much more than a fashion statement. It is a simple way to spotlight the fact that cancer is the second most common cause of death in the U.S. – exceeded only by heart disease, which accounts for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths. It is also an opportunity to remind people about all the ways they can reduce their risk of cancer; like eating right, exercising, making healthy lifestyle choices and following the American Cancer Society’s recommended cancer screening guidelines.

In addition to the day’s festivities, House Concurrent Resolution 14 was brought before the chamber regarding cervical cancer prevention. Rep. Richardson co-authored the resolution as the House heard from a local family and their fight against the disease.

“In light of today’s awareness of all cancers and how we can fight against them, I was proud to be a co-author of a resolution passed today that honored the Forbes family of Noblesville for their efforts in fighting against cervical cancer,” Rep. Richardson said. “Kirk and Brenda Forbes tragically lost their daughter Kristen to cervical cancer but used that tragedy to spread awareness and help others prevent the same fate. It is because of people like the Forbes family that we have seen a decline in the number of new cases each year. Educating people about preventative measures that women can take to protect themselves from this cancer is critical to saving lives.”
