Entry Description
STATEHOUSE - House Bill (HB) 1141 authored by State Representative Wendy McNamara (R-Mount Vernon) and co-authored by Rep. Dave Ober (R-Albion) passed out of the House today with a unanimous vote.

HB 1141 requires the Indiana State Police Department to develop and maintain a website with a list of methamphetamine-contaminated residences to alert the public of potentially dangerous chemicals on these properties.

“Potential homeowners or anyone looking to inhabit a space once used as a meth lab should be able to access information about a building’s previous use,” said Rep. Ober. “Chemical residue from meth labs can remain in a building for a significant amount of time, potentially harming the health of anyone who spends time in it, said Rep. Ober. “These properties need to be cleaned up and made available for resale to prevent the threat of abandoned housing.”

HB 1141 also obligates the Real Estate Commission to require an owner to disclose if a property has been used for the manufacture of methamphetamine.

“Meth is an epidemic in our communities, and we need to ensure that once a meth lab has been removed and the building cleared, it is used for a new purpose. We can’t let meth continue to harm our citizens and create even more unusable space in our hometowns.”

HB 1141 will now go to the Senate for further discussion.

Rep. Ober represents all of Noble County and portions of Allen, Elkhart, LaGrange and Whitley counties.
