I-70 Traffic Lanes Shifting to Work Zone Configuration

HANCOCK COUNTY – Contractors for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) plan to shift I-70 traffic lanes over the next two weeks before beginning pavement improvements on the westbound side of the interstate between State Road 9 (Exit 104 to Greenfield) and Mt. Comfort Road (Exit 96).

Milestone Contractors, the INDOT contractor for the $15.2 million project, will restrict one eastbound lane Thursday and Friday nights to shift both eastbound lanes of traffic toward the south shoulder. Milestone will work overnight hours for approximately another week setting temporary concrete barrier wall to separate opposing directions of traffic when one lane of westbound traffic is shifted across the median in early April.

The temporary traffic configuration is very similar to the work zone that was in place last year when Milestone repaired the eastbound side of the highway. This year, one lane of westbound traffic will be directed to a median crossover to share the eastbound side of the highway while repairs are made to the westbound side of the interstate.

The left lane of westbound I-70 will also be temporarily restricted tonight and Thursday night for inspection of drainage structures in the median. All lane restrictions are expected to take place during off-peak traffic periods, weeknights between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. and on weekends. The contract is scheduled to be complete this summer.

Drivers are advised to practice safe habits in highway work zones, such as following work zone speed limits, maintaining safe distances from other vehicles, and avoiding distractions. INDOT partners with the Indiana State Police to provide increased work zones patrols and promote public safety. Motorists are urged to always comply with work zone speed limits, maintain safe distances from other vehicles and avoid distractions to improve safety for both highway workers and motorists.

INDOT encourages motorists, residents and businesses to visit www.indot.in.gov and subscribe to receive INDOT news and information by email using the red GovDelivery envelope icon. Updates will also be provided on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/INDOTEastCentral and by following @INDOT_ECentral on Twitter.
