[DNR] DNR employee honored by parks profession group
Start Date: 3/17/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 3/17/2014End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description
Ginger Murphy, assistant director for stewardship of Indiana State Parks & Reservoirs, was recently recognized for “continued and significant contributions to the parks and recreation profession in the Great Lakes region.”

The Great Lakes Park Training Institute, an Indiana University initiative held annually at Pokagon State Park, honored Murphy with its annual Lawson Award. The award is named after Richard Lawson, a long-time educator in the university’s Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department, and an advocate of continued training for parks and recreation professionals.

Vicki Basman, chief of interpretation for Indiana State Parks & Reservoirs, nominated Murphy.

“Through her tireless efforts to help Hoosiers ultimately connect with the land and its resources, the entire state has benefitted,” Basman wrote.

Murphy started her career as an interpreter at Salamonie Lake, where she helped expand public programs not only at Salamonie, but also nearby Mississinewa and J.E. Roush lakes, and played a key role in the development of an interpretive center for Upper Wabash Interpretive Services at Salamonie.

After Salamonie, she worked for eight years as chief of interpretation, overseeing the building of three new nature centers and the expansion of DNR’s interpretive staff.

In Murphy’s current position, she creates policies and programs to guide overall stewardship efforts, including finding ways to honor the Indiana state park system’s centennial celebration in 2016.

“Ginger’s passion for Indiana’s special places and the people who come here is evident in all that she does,” said Dan Bortner, director of DNR State Parks & Reservoirs. “Hoosiers have been blessed to have her expertise and energy working for them and will for many years to come.”
