[DNR] Patoka Lake open house will celebrate new bald eagle
Start Date: 5/10/2014Start Time: 11:00 AM
End Date: 5/10/2014End Time: 3:00 PM
Entry Description
The public can meet Patoka Lake Visitors Center’s new educational bald eagle at an open house on Saturday, May 10.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the visitors center, which is in Newton-Stewart State Recreation Area.

The female eagle will be used in educational programs to teach visitors about wildlife and the importance of conservation. She is about 11 months old and was born at Kenai National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. When she was 5 weeks old, the tree her nest was in collapsed, breaking her right wing in three spots.

Too injured to return to the wild, the bird was cared for by licensed rehabilitators in Alaska and then California. Patoka Lake naturalist Dana Reckelhoff received legal permission through the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife to have it moved to Indiana in December.

The eagle was kept out of the public eye until Reckelhoff and others could train the bird for educational programs.

Refreshments and light snacks will be served. A kids craft station will offer eagle-themed crafts to take home. The schedule will be:

— 11a.m. to 3 p.m.: Bald eagle and Eastern screech owl in backyard viewing shelters.
— 11:30 a.m.: Prey/predator game for kids on the south lawn.
— Noon to 2:30 p.m.: Refreshments at the visitors center.
— 12:30 p.m.: Get your picture taken with the eagle and her handlers. Donations toward eagle care will be accepted.
