[INDOT - East Central] US 31 Segment Shifting to Final Configuration (Hamilton County)

Entry Description

U.S. 31 Segment Shifting to Final Configuration,

New “Split Diamond” Interchange Ramps Opening

HAMILTON COUNTY – This weekend, contractors for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) plan to shift U.S. 31 traffic between 146th and 161st streets into a final configuration and open new ramps in the “split diamond” interchange connecting the highway with 146th Street, 151st Street and Greyhound Pass.

Weather permitting, Rieth-Riley Construction anticipates shifting northbound U.S. 31 onto new pavement between 146th and 161st streets and opening two ramp segments beginning Saturday:

  • A new northbound U.S. 31 exit ramp to 151st Street will split from the 146th Street exit.
  • A new entrance ramp will open from 151st Street to northbound U.S. 31.

The existing right turn from northbound U.S. 31 to Greyhound Pass will no longer be available. This change in access is permanent. Posted and dynamic message signs will be used to help direct motorists who might be unaware of these changes:

  • Northbound U.S. 31 traffic must exit south of 146th Street to access Greyhound Pass and 151st Street.
  • Northbound Keystone Parkway must exit to 146th Street to access Greyhound Pass.

For a short time on Saturday, access to northbound U.S. 31 will not be available from either the signal at Greyhound Pass or the new entrance ramp from 151st Street. Motorists will be directed to use a temporary detour route following 151st Street to Oak Street and then to 161st Street.

Motorists are encouraged to be patient in this area this weekend. Various restrictions and delays should be expected as contractors work to open the ramps and implement the final traffic configuration. Motorists should remain alert and drive cautiously as the area will remain an active work zone.

Rieth-Riley is also upgrading nearly four miles of U.S. 31 through Westfield, including new interchanges at State Road 32 and 191st Street. A separate contract with E & B Paving and Gradex is upgrading between the I-465 interchange and the Monon Trail overpass, which includes the current closure of U.S. 31 between Old Meridian and 136th streets.

Upgrading U.S. 31 to freeway standards from I-465 to State Road 38 is the largest and most aggressive road project ever implemented in Hamilton County. The New U.S. 31 Hamilton County is part of a Major Moves program to upgrade or bypass congested sections of U.S. 31 between Indianapolis and South Bend—reducing congestion, improving safety and providing continuity of commerce and regional travel for a U.S. highway that stretches from Michigan to Alabama.
