I-70 Restrictions for East Street Bridge Work

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to begin removing half of the existing East Street bridge deck over Interstate 70 on Sunday night. Overnight (11 p.m. to 5 a.m.) restrictions near the south split should be expected for approximately two weeks on eastbound I-70 and both the north and southbound I-65 ramps to westbound I-70.

Beaty Construction, the INDOT contractor for the project, plans to temporarily close the left lane of eastbound I-70 Saturday night to place signs and barrels along the left shoulder between Harding Street (Exit 78) and the East Street bridge.

Some temporary closures or flagging of traffic across the East Street bridge will be requested during off-peak traffic times (overnights and weekends). The short-term restrictions will be limited to specific operations, such as demolition, setting beams and pouring parts of the bridge deck, and are intended to improve motorist and worker safety.

Before the end of this year, INDOT intends to raise the East Street bridge by about twelve inches to achieve a minimum clearance of at least 15 feet, 1 inch. Last year, INDOT was able to increase clearances of seven bridges near the south split to at least 15 feet.  An accelerated project closed I-70 and I-65 between the north and south split for 44 days to reconstruct and lower one-half mile of pavement. The South Split project was necessary to reduce the potential for collisions from unpermitted and off-route trucks with oversize and unsecure loads. Repeated bridge strikes from these trucks posed a safety concern.

Even with the increased clearances at the South Split, INDOT reminds all drivers to follow safety requirements by properly securing and measuring all loads, obtaining permits for loads higher than 13 feet 6 inches and following designated routes for oversize vehicles.

Information about the project and video of bridge strikes are available at Motorists, businesses and residents are encouraged to stay informed by signing up to receive email updates using the red GovDelivery envelope icon.

Project updates are posted to INDOT’s social media pages for East Central Indiana, which includes Indianapolis. Project posts are tagged with #EastStreet and #SouthSplit on the Indiana Department of Transportation: East Central Facebook page and on Twitter @INDOT_ECentral.
