[ISP] Stolen $300,000 Chevelle Recovered; Indianapolis Man Arrested
Start Date: 4/25/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 4/25/2014
Entry Description
Indianapolis- An Indianapolis man is in the Hamilton County Jail facing two felony charges and a $15,000 bond after he allegedly tried to sell a stolen 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle to undercover State Police officers.

The investigation began when a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle and four other vehicles were stolen on September 22nd, 2013 from Indianapolis while participants were in town for the 2012 Good Guy’s Car Show, held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Two of the vehicles, a 2002 Chevrolet Dually pickup and a 1949 Chevrolet custom truck were recovered on September 28, 2013. Information gained during that investigation led to a possible suspect.

In late March of this year the previous owners of the 1970 Chevelle, Keith Parmer and Terrie Perkins, received a telephone call from someone identifying himself as “Herb.” Herb told them he had taken the car in trade of a motorcycle and cash that was in excess of $20,000. Herb explained he wanted to return the car but he needed to recoup his investment and was requesting $20,000 for the return of the vehicle. Herb said he would allow them two weeks to make a decision then he would have to part the car out if they were not able to come up with the payment.

On April 12th, Indiana State Police undercover detectives, along with Parmer, made arrangements to meet with Herb on North Meridian Street in Hamilton County. Herb had stated during an earlier phone conversation that he needed to recoup $20,000 but during this conversation he indicated he would take $10,000.

Undercover officers waited for Herb in a parking lot and when he arrived with the Chevelle he was taken in for questioning without incident. Herb was identified as Herbert Lee Jones III, 31, 8277 Harcourt Road Apt. 243, Indianapolis.

Information learned during the investigation by Indiana State Police Detective Les Norvell led to a warrant being issued for Jones arrest. Jones was arrested this morning, Friday April 25th, at a residence in the 5000 block of Caroline Avenue, Indianapolis. He was transported to the Hamilton County Jail without incident.

Jones has been charged with Receiving Stolen Property; value of property is at least $100,000, Class C Felony and Auto Theft, Class D Felony.

The Indiana State Police would like to thank the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, Lawrence Police Department, and the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) for their effort and assistance throughout this investigation.
