[ISP] K-9 Boss is Retiring

Entry Description

Lowell-Corporal Mike Jones lost his working partner to retirement but gained a lifelong friend and companion. Jones’s K-9 partner Boss was officially retired May 6th, 2014.

Boss, a German shepherd, from Holland graduated January 5, 2007 in a ceremony at the Allen County Courthouse in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Boss and Jones underwent 17 weeks of intense training. The multidimensional K-9 was certified in area of Obedience, Evidence Search, Area and Building Searches, Tracking, Aggression Control and detection of several controlled substances.

Boss was purchased through a generous donation by the Porter County’s prosecutor’s office.

Jones and Boss have worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Agency, Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, U.S. Marshall, Gang Response Investigation Team, Domestic Highway Enforcement, local police and sheriff departments, assisted Michigan State Police and other departments in Illinois.

Since 2007 Boss and Jones have been responsible for: 16 tracks, 16 finds, 502 searches, 128 arrests, 27 building searches, 9 article searches, and 155 perimeter searches.. They have also recovered 0.53 pounds of methamphetamine, 5,370 pounds of marijuana, 38.58 pounds of cocaine, 5.71 pounds of crack, .02 pounds of ecstasy, and 28.33 pounds of heroin.

First Sergeant Terrance Weems, acting commander of the Indiana State Police Lowell Post stated, “Boss has proven to be a tremendous service to our citizens and law enforcement. We are very thankful for his contribution and assistance. He will be missed.”

Boss is now residing with Corporal Jones and his wife in their home in Porter County.
