Entry Description

Jennings County: This morning a North Vernon man was arrested after he attempted to run from police. According to Trooper Randel Miller, at approximately 10:25 this morning he attempted to stop a Chevrolet Blazer in an alley near Walnut Street (behind Ruby Jane’s Apartments) in North Vernon. The Blazer was being driven by 29 year old Blake A Schultz of North Vernon and Tpr. Miller knew his license was suspended. When Tpr. Miller activated his emergency lights the Blazer fled through the alley for two to three blocks at speeds up to 60 miles per hour. When the Blazer reached a T intersection it was going too fast to make the turn onto Vernon Street. Schultz jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot as the Blazer continued forward stopping after striking a utility pole. Schultz ran through a field, a yard, across the railroad tracks, and through a wooded area. A perimeter was established and a short time later North Vernon Officer Mike Pirto located Schultz in a garage on Greensburg St. trying to hide under a stack of mattresses.

Tpr. Miller ran his K-9 partner, Jinx around the Blazer and Jinx indicated on the vehicle. A subsequent search revealed .5 grams of crystal meth, 6 syringes, a handgun, digital scale, 12 Dilaudid pills, 17 Clonazapam pills, 16 Hydrocodone pills, and various paraphernalia. Schultz was transported to Jennings County Jail where he was held with no bond and is facing the following charges:

Dealing methamphetamine over 3 grams, Class A Felony
Possession of methamphetamine and a handgun, Class B Felony
Possession of methamphetamine over 3 grams, Class C Felony
Dealing a controlled substance, Class B Felony
Possession of a schedule II controlled substance, Class D Felony
Possession of a scheduled III controlled substance, Class D Felony
Possession of a scheduled IV controlled substance, Class D Felony
Possession of a syringe, Class D Felony
Possession of paraphernalia, Class D Felony
Resisting law enforcement in a vehicle, Class D Felony

Tpr, Miller was assisted by North Vernon Police, Jennings County Sheriff’s Office, and other troopers. Tpr. Miller commented, “I am grateful for the assistance of the officers involved and their professional and rapid response. I’d also like to thank all the concerned citizens who provided information which assisted the police in locating the suspect.”
