[APPEALS] Court of Appeals welcomes 2014 Carr L. Darden CLEO interns
Start Date: 5/19/2014 All Day
End Date: 5/19/2014
Entry Description

Court of Appeals names seven Carr L. Darden 2014 CLEO Interns

Students from three law schools welcomed to court for 17th consecutive year

INDIANAPOLIS – The Court of Appeals of Indiana has selected seven students from three Indiana law schools for its 2014 Carr L. Darden Conference for Legal Education Opportunity internship program, or CLEO.

The 10-week internships will immerse the students in the court’s daily work, guided by some of Indiana’s most accomplished and respected jurists. The interns will also make site visits to other courts and government agencies, including U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, the Office of the Indiana Attorney General, the Indiana Department of Correction and Marion Superior Court.

“CLEO is win-win-win,” Chief Judge Nancy H. Vaidik said. “Our interns win through their immersion in the court’s day to day work. The court benefits from their energy and passion. And the legal profession gains a more diverse pool of people entering the law.”

Three of this year’s interns are past Fellows of the Indiana CLEO Summer Institute, which helps prepare students for the rigors and challenges of law school. The others satisfy eligibility requirements for the Indiana Conference for Legal Education Opportunity, which was established by statute in 1997 to assist Indiana minority, low income or educationally disadvantaged students pursue law degrees and careers in Indiana’s legal and professional communities.

The Court of Appeals has participated in CLEO since its inception. In 2012, the Court named its CLEO internships for the Honorable Carr L. Darden, who retired from the court that year and now serves as a Court of Appeals Senior Judge.

Many of the court’s CLEO interns have built successful legal careers, including Court of Appeals Judge Rudolph R. Pyle III; Thao T. Nguyen, a partner at Plews Shadley Racher & Braun LLP, South Bend; Ryan K. Gardner, president and CEO of Ryan Gardner P.C.; and Jennifer Weber, a court services attorney for the Indiana Supreme Court/Indiana Judicial Center.
