[DNR] CCC presentation at Ouabache SP, May 31
Start Date: 5/31/2014Start Time: 7:00 PM
End Date: 5/31/2014
Entry Description
Visitors to Ouabache State Park can learn how the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) helped develop the park during the Great Depression at a presentation on May 31.

The presentation is at 7 p.m. in the Trails End Shelter, which the CCC built. The event is free and open to the public. Standard park admission fee of $5 per in-state vehicle and $7 per out-of-state vehicle applies. The program is sponsored by the Friends of Ouabache State Park group and the park.

The CCC was a government work program that provided jobs to young, unemployed men during the Great Depression. The workers developed parks; built roads, trails and fire towers; planted trees; and more. Many structures and trees can still be seen at Ouabache.

The Friends group will show the audience historic photos and CCC memorabilia. After the presentation, participants can tour the park to view structures built by the CCC.

The Friends group is raising funds to install a CCC statue at the park. There is currently one such statue in Indiana, at Versailles State Park. Bluffton resident Wayne Lydy, age 91, and his daughter, Friends group president Myra Myrtle are leading the effort to get the statue. Lydy is one of the oldest surviving CCC veterans in Indiana.

For questions about the program, contact Myrtle at (260) 273-1686 or Jody Heaston at

Contributions toward the statue can be made by check to the Friends of Ouabache State Park, with “Ouabache Statue Project” written in the memo space. Donations may be tax deductible.
