INDIANA BOARD OF PHARMACY BANS COMPOUNDS USED IN “SPICE” AND “K2” TYPES OF SYNTHETIC DRUGS

The Indiana Board of Pharmacy recently passed emergency rules banning four different types of compounds used in synthetic drugs, such as “Spice” and “K2.” The rules were posted on Indiana Register today.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Spice products are only second to marijuana in the use of illicit drugs by young people due to its easy access, the misperception that it is ‘natural’ and that it is not easily detected on drug tests.

“Synthetic drug abuse is a major concern to the Board of Pharmacy, and they are working hard to protect consumers from this threat,” said Nicholas W. Rhoad, Executive Director of the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency. “These harmful products can be lethal and are being marketed to and targeted at Indiana’s youth. We are collaborating with the authorities to quickly respond to these situations and make sure that these drugs aren’t available.”

The Board works closely with the Indiana State Police to identify the compounds used in synthetic drugs so that swift action can be taken. These rules will extend to next year, allowing the Legislature the opportunity to enact the rules into law.

“The Board is squarely focused on protecting the health, safety and well-being of Hoosier families and children, and we are being vigilant in the oversight to remove access to these dangerous substances,” said Rhoad.

Rogue chemists constantly change the chemical formulas of these dangerous synthetic drugs in an effort to stay ahead of lawmakers.  Indiana Code allows the Board of Pharmacy to pass emergency rules so that law enforcement can take effective and timely action against this threat to Hoosiers.
