[INDOT - East Central] Crews Replacing Reflective Markers on I-70 near Richmond

Entry Description

Crews Replacing Reflective Markers on I-70

WAYNE COUNTY – Contractors for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) plan lane restrictions on Interstate 70 this week to replace snowplowable reflective pavement markers between U.S. 35/Williamsburg Pike (Richmond Exit 149) and U.S. 40 (Richmond Exit 156).

Crews plan to replace the snowplowable reflective pavement markers starting Thursday, June 19 at 8 p.m. Crews will restrict the right lane of eastbound I-70 and the left lane of westbound I-70. Work is dependent on favorable weather and is expected to be complete by Friday, June 20 at 6 a.m.

The pavement markers are a safety device used on roads to enhance visibility and delineation by reflecting an automobile’s headlights. Markers are embedded into the pavement and have a smooth housing that minimizes contact with snow plow blades. The color of the reflectors typically matches the yellow and white painted stripes on the roadway. Blue reflectors are also commonly used to identify locations of fire hydrants.

As part of a separate contract, crews plan to close the right lane of eastbound I-70 and the loop ramp to northbound U.S. 35/Williamsburg Pike (Exit 149 B) for pavement repairs. Restrictions will be in place while crews work Friday at 9 p.m. through Sunday. This work could be postponed in the event of inclement weather. Overnight and weekend I-70 lane restrictions should be expected through this summer as crews progress with pavement repairs in the Centerville and Richmond areas.

Motorists are urged to practice safe driving habits, especially in and around work zones. Follow speed limits, maintain safe distances from other vehicles and avoid all distractions—especially cell phones. The Indiana Work Zone Safety Law sets steep penalties for driving infractions within highway work zones. INDOT partners with the Indiana State Police to provide increased patrols and promote public safety in work zones. For more information on work zone safety, go to
