Arts Commission announces registration now open for Come Together conference

(Indianapolis, Indiana)The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) announced today that registration is now open for a one-day conference, Come Together: Arts Boards, Staff, & Community Engagement, August 8, 2014, on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis.

The conference is designed to help arts organizations and their leadership boards become stronger and more effective in their role of developing and maintaining successful community partnership opportunities. Registration is $50 per person, or $90 for any two people.

Presentation topics will include developing community partnership and engagement opportunities, building stronger board leadership, successful fundraising, and how to successfully measure organizational impact. Panel discussions will also feature valuable information for any arts organization executive staff, board members, and volunteers.

“Increasingly, arts organizations are taking an active role in advancing community and economic development to build stronger, vibrant communities,” said Lewis C. Ricci, IAC Executive Director. “To be successful, it takes more than simply having a seat at the planning table. This conference will explore important areas where arts organizations and their leadership can become influential, and more effective.”

The conference will be held on the campus of IUPUI near downtown Indianapolis. For more information about the conference, conference speakers, and how to register, please visit www.in.gov/arts/2659.htm

Keynote speaker for the conference will be Karen Gahl-Mills, executive director of Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, Cleveland, Ohio, one of the nation’s top sources of local public funding for arts and culture. In total, the organization has granted over $112 million to more than 250 local arts organizations throughout Cuyahoga County. Ms. Gahl-Mills holds a Bachelor of Music degree from DePaul University and a MBA from the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business.

Among other presenters at the conference will be: Susan Hardwick, senior vice-president and chief financial officer of Vectren Corporation; Suzann Lupton, clinical assistant professor and Director of Academic Affairs at the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA); Sandra Bernhard, Director of HGOco, Houston Grand Opera’s award-winning, unique initiative the explores ways of making opera relevant to changing audiences; Rachel Candee, Manager, Skill-based Volunteering & Hoosier Corps at United Way of Central Indiana; and Michael Kaufmann, Connect Indy, and Health & Hospital Corporation, where he serves as director of special projects and civic investment.
