Entry Description This is a five-day course of instruction, with enrollment limited to LETB Certified Firearms Instructors. It will give Firearms Instructors a thorough understanding of the nomenclature, operation, disassembly, assembly, function, marksmanship fundamentals and skills, care and cleaning, and use of the patrol carbine. The student will also come away from the course with a thorough understanding of shooting on the move, firing in dim light, and being able to utilize other tactical equipment while maintaining control of the police carbine.
Successful participants will be able to utilize this training to implement the use of the patrol carbine in their own departments. This class is limited to AR15/M16 weapons due to the fact that the majority of carbines in the possession of departments are of this platform. The Academy will provide the ammunition required for the course. Students will be required to present themselves with an AR15/M16 type weapon with a minimum of three magazines. Students should also bring knee and elbow pads, hearing protection, and cleaning equipment.
Attendees will receive a notebook with information concerning the nomenclature, maintenance and use of the AR15/M16 weapons platform. Also included will be a CD-ROM of resource information with deployment policies, technical information and on-line resources.
Instructional Goals: At the conclusion of the Patrol Carbine Course the student will:
- the nomenclature of the carbine.
- Know now to safely operate the carbine on the range and in the field.
- Know how to safely load and unload the carbine in a tactical and administrative mode.
- Know how to disassemble, clean, lubricate and assemble the carbine properly.
- Understand marksmanship fundamentals, enabling the student to accurately shoot and hit designated target.
- Be able to hit targets while shooting on the move.
- Be able to accurately shoot the carbine utilizing low light techniques.
- Be able to successfully engage multiple targets.
- Be able to utilize different firing positions (off-hand, kneeling, sitting, prone, and barricade).
- Be able to use cover and concealment.
- Know how to transition from the carbine to the handgun.
- Know how to perform immediate action drills to return the carbine to service.
- Understand the law and use of force continuum.
- Understand when to deploy the carbine and how to deploy it from a patrol car.
- Understand external and terminal ballistics.
- Identifying and defeating intermediate barriers.
Due to the class size (20 students), enrollment will be limited to only two officers per department.
Cost: $600 Resident/$475 Commuter for Indiana Residents
$720 Resident/$570 Commuter for Out-of-State Residents
Inservice Credit: 38 hours
If a department needs to cancel a student from this class, it must be done no later than five (5) working days prior to the start of the class. If a student does not show up or cancellation is made any closer to the start of the class the agency will be responsible for payment in full of this class.
