U.S. 31 Restrictions Next Week
Near 161st Street in Westfield
156th Street Closing Tomorrow

WESTFIELD, Ind. – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to restrict traffic next week on U.S. 31 approaching 161st Street for work on the new interchange bridge.

On Tuesday, May 28, the right lane of southbound U.S. 31 will be restricted to remove sheet piling from around the center pier of the bridge. The lane restriction will begin at 9 p.m. and is expected to end by 6 a.m. Wednesday.

On Thursday, May 30 at 9 p.m., the right lanes of northbound and southbound U.S. 31 approaching 161st Street will be restricted. Temporary traffic stops of up to 20 minutes at a time should be expected after midnight to allow crews to lift and set bridge beams into place. All restrictions are expected to end by 6 a.m.

Rieth-Riley, the state’s contractor for the $58 million project, closed 161st Street on April 15 for a maximum of 120 days to construct the roundabout interchange. The contract will also build a split diamond interchange with ramps connecting 146th Street to the north with Greyhound Pass and 151st Street.

For the safety of motorists, 156th Street west of U.S. 31 will close on Friday, May 24 at 6 a.m. As construction of the new southbound U.S. 31 overpass continues, INDOT and contractors anticipate the overpass wall on the north side of 156th Street will obstruct a safe line of sight for traffic on eastbound 156th Street turning onto southbound U.S. 31. Access to private driveways and businesses will be maintained. Through traffic on 156th Street will be restored after U.S. 31 traffic is shifted to newly-constructed southbound lanes later this summer.
