Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (Sept. 20, 2013) — The Indiana Judges Association recently named State Sen. Luke Kenley (R-Noblesville) a “Champion of Justice” for his efforts during the General Assembly’s 2013 legislative session.

Judge John R. Pera, president of the Indiana Judges Association, said Kenley’s insight was instrumental in the passage of House Enrolled Act 1393, authored by State Rep. Greg Steuerwald (R-Avon). This established the Judicial Technology Oversight Committee (JTOC), which will continually assess the cost and effectiveness of information technology in Indiana’s judicial system.

“It was his attention to our issues from both a fiscal and oversight perspective that shaped the legislation and led to the creation of the new JTOC committee, which met this week for the first time,” Pera said. “As the main sponsor of the legislation in the Senate, Senator Kenley worked with his colleagues to iron out concerns raised in the Senate, and with Representative Steuerwald to ensure the passage of the legislation.”

Kenley said the committee will provide the necessary framework to streamline technology and automation in the state’s courts.

“Technology changes quickly, and our judicial system must keep up with it in order to operate effectively,” Kenley said. “At the same time, it’s necessary to ensure the money used for this technology is being invested wisely. This committee will combine these two tasks and develop a long-range strategy for implementing and assessing new advancements.”

Kenley has been involved in judicial affairs for many years. He received a juris doctor degree from Harvard University and served as a Noblesville City Court judge for 15 years. Previously, Kenley was a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and he currently chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee.

The Indiana Judges Association also honored Steuerwald, State Sen. Brent Steele (R-Bedford) and State Rep. Steven Braun (R-Zionsville) with the Champion of Justice award at their annual meeting in Fort Wayne.
