[IDEM] Knox County tire processor denied permit renewal; charges pending
Start Date: 1/22/2013
End Date: 1/22/2013
Entry Description

Hoosiers are warned they will be in violation of Indiana law if they take waste tires to Stewart Recycling, Inc.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is warning Indiana residents and businesses it is a violation of state law to take waste tires to Stewart Recycling, Inc., 10701 E. Hamlin Chapel Road, Monroe City, Ind. Anyone taking waste tires to the Knox County business will be in violation of state law because IDEM has revoked its waste tire registration. Indiana law requires all waste tire processors, storage facilities and transporters to be properly registered with the state through IDEM.

IDEM inspectors have repeatedly found Stewart Recycling, Inc. in violation of state laws and rules since 2007. Each time the agency has taken appropriate enforcement action to try and bring the company into compliance; however, in subsequent inspections IDEM staff would find repeated violations. IDEM used its authority to deny Stewart Recycling, Inc. its registration renewal on May 2, 2012, making it illegal for them to receive waste tires. A Contempt Hearing is set for 10 a.m., Wednesday, January 23, 2013, in Knox Superior Court I, with Judge Crowley.

IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly said, “Sometimes we find that we are at the end of our rope with facilities that refuse to abide by the laws and rules. IDEM has patiently worked with Stewart Tire Recycling, Inc. to bring them into compliance and to make sure they fully understand their environmental responsibilities. Because they have chosen to continually violate environmental laws and rules, IDEM has had to take the most extreme action to protect Hoosiers and the environment. It is unfortunate that one bad player casts a dark shadow over the majority of businesses in the waste tire industry that are operating in compliance with their registration. I want citizens to know that we are serious about protecting them and the environment. We are making Hoosiers aware that it is a violation of law to take waste tires to Stewart Tire Recycling, Inc.”

Hoosiers will find a list of permitted recyclers at IDEM’s website: More information about waste tire recycling can be found at:
