Arts Day 2009

The Indiana Coalition for the Arts hosted the 11th Annual Arts Day at the State House on Thursday, March 12, 2009.

Indiana artists, arts leaders, citizens, and legislators showed their support of the arts by attending this event that included exhibits from the Indiana Arts Commission's 12 Regional Arts Partners, as well as arts organizations from around the state.  Indiana Poet Laureate Norbert Krapf recited his poetry at the event, and the Arlington Community High School show choir performed.

Arts Day also included the Community Arts Leadership Awards (CALA) ceremony, which honored four outstanding Hoosiers for their part in advancing the cause of community and local arts in Indiana.  CALA awards were presented to the following people:

Arts Volunteer:  IAC Commissioner Jeanne Mirro, Fort Wayne
Arts Educator:  Patti Moore, Freelandville
Arts Administrator:  John Cain, Executive Director of South Shore Arts
Arts Advocate:  Rep. Sheila Klinker (D-Lafayette)

Each recipient received an original piece of art created by an Indiana artist.  The awarding of Arts Advocate to Rep. Sheila Klinker marked the first time this award has been presented to a legislator.  Rep. Klinker has been an influential voice  for the Indiana arts community.  She established the Cultural Trust Fund in 1997, pushed for an Indiana arts license plate, and sponsored bills to form a statewide folk arts organization.
