BMV > New Residents > Registering Your Vehicle Vehicle Registrations

To obtain a vehicle registration you must provide the following at the license branch:

  • Certificate of Origin or Out-of-State Title
  • Proof of Insurance
  • Verification of Social Security Number
  • Proof that the vehicle you are registering passed a vehicle emissions test if you live in Lake and Porter counties. For more information, visit the Indiana vehicle emissions testing section of the Web site.

In addition, you must apply for an Indiana title before the license branch can issue you a license plate.
