myBMV > Off-Road Vehicles and Snowmobiles > Registrations / Decals Registrations / Decals

All ORVs and snowmobiles operated in Indiana must be registered with the BMV and display valid ORV or snowmobile decals unless otherwise exempt. Operation of properly registered ORVs and snowmobiles is permitted on Indiana public property where authorized by the Department of Natural Resources, roadways where authorized by the county highway department, and on private property with the consent of the landowner.

The following are exempt from obtaining an Indiana registration:

  • An ORV or snowmobile that is exclusively operated in a special event of limited duration that is conducted according to a prearranged schedule under a permit from the governmental unit having jurisdiction.
  • An ORV or snowmobile registered in another state or country and being operated by a nonresident of Indiana for a period not to exceed twenty (20) days in one (1) year.
  • An ORV or snowmobile that is being operated for purposes of testing or demonstration and on which dealer certificate numbers have been placed.
  • An ORV or snowmobile that is owned or leased and used for official business by the state, a municipal corporation, or a volunteer fire department.
  • An ORV or snowmobile being operated by a person who has in their possession a Bill of Sale from a dealer or private individual that includes the following information:
    • Purchaser’s name and address
    • Date of purchase (purchase must have occurred fewer than 31 days ago)
    • Year, Make, and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the off-road vehicle or snowmobile.

ORV and snowmobile registrations and decals may be ordered through myBMV or at any license branch. If a title is required for an ORV, the title must be applied for prior to registering online. You will receive your Certificate of Registration and decal within 14 days.

Out-of-State ORV / Snowmobile Operated in Indiana

An out-of-state resident must obtain a registration in Indiana if either of the following conditions apply:

  • The ORV or snowmobile is not registered in the state of residence.
  • The ORV or snowmobile is registered in the state of residence but will be operated in Indiana for more than 20 days.

Some states only issued permits which are not a valid registration. Contact the Indiana Department of Natural Resources at (877) 463-6367 or their website at for questions regarding the validity of your current out of state registration or decals.

Dealer ORV and snowmobile registration applications are processed by the BMV Central Office to improve the security and efficiency of these transactions. Prior to submitting each application, verify all required information is included. Contact (888) 692-6841 with any questions.
