Every vehicle registered in Indiana must bear a license plate in a visible location on the rear of the vehicle. Regular license plates are issued for vehicles registered in Indiana every four years, or when a newly acquired vehicle is registered in the state, or when a vehicle owner becomes a resident of the state. Special recognition license plates allows motorists to support Indiana universities, colleges, military personnel, and various organizations.

Hoosiers who purchase a special recognition license plate should expect to pay the following fees:

  • Group fees determined by the organization sponsoring the license plate;
  • Administrative fee of $15, except "Support Our Troops," Pearl Harbor Survivor, Purple Heart, Hoosier Veteran, and Ex-Prisoner of War plates;
  • Registration fees determined by the year and make of the vehicle and the customer's county of residence.

Customers may request any available license plate with a low number (from 1-100) for an additional $30.

For further information on obtaining a special recognition license plate, contact one of the organizations listed below to request an application. Once you complete and return the application and donation (if required) to the sponsoring organization, the organization will send you an authorization form that can be taken to any license branch to obtain a license plate.
