BMV > Titles Titles

Many auto dealers around Indiana are partnering with the BMV to offer title and registeration services with a vehicle purchase. Additionally, you may now complete a number of transactions online such as registering a new vehicle, ordering duplicate titles, and updating personal information, by establishing a personal myBMV account.

Buying Or Selling A Vehicle

A completed certificate of title is evidence of vehicle ownership. In Indiana, all motor vehicles, trailers, mobile homes and recreational vehicles must be titled. If you have recently purchased a vehicle with an Indiana title, or received as a gift a vehicle with an Indiana title, you must must title it in your own name within 31 days of purchasing or receiving it.

Indiana's sales tax is seven percent for all vehicles, whether purchased in Indiana or in another state.

If you have paid off your vehicle and received a lien release from your vehicle’s lienholder, you may either apply for a clear title or hold the lien release until you sell the vehicle.

Ordering Additional Titles

You may purchase a duplicate title online by creating a myBMV account, by visiting any Indiana license branch, or by mail. The cost for a duplicate title is $9 and the additional fee for a faster turnaround time is $25.

Adding Or Removing Names On A Title

You may add another individual's name to a title in order to establish joint ownership of a vehicle. You may also remove names from a title.

Salvaged Vehicles

A salvage title is required for a motor vehicle, motorcycle, semi-trailer, or recreational vehicle that has been wrecked or damaged.

Abandoned Vehicles

In 2007, the Abandoned Vehicles Division of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles ceased to conduct sales of abandoned vehicles as detailed in House Bill 1425.

Titling Your Manufactured Home

An individual who owns a manufactured home attached to real property may now obtain a title for the home instead of using the Affadavit to Transfer to Real Estate process.
