Recreational Vehicle And Camper Excise Tax

Owners of recreational vehicles and campers are asked to provide information about their vehicles so that a correct renewal notice may be sent to them in 2010. Providing this information will allow the BMV to offer more registration renewal choices in the future for recreational vehicles and campers.

Indiana's License Plates

You may choose from over 75 license plate designs including Indiana's standard and historic plates, plates that support military personnel and their families, plates that benefit local schools or organizations, personalized plates, and plates for specific types of vehicles.

Indiana's newest license plates

Two new specialty license plates honoring Indiana's military service members will be available in 2010. The POW-MIA license plate remembers all Hoosier veterans who are missing in action or listed as prisoners of war and will be available to any Indiana motorist. The Gold Star Family license plate commemorates Indiana's fallen heroes and will be available to spouses, parents, siblings or children of anyone who died while serving on active duty.

Your Registration Renewal Deadline

You may have noticed a message in last year's registration renewal notice indicating that your renewal date is changing in 2009. The BMV is extending the number of renewal deadlines in 2009 to provide a smoother flow of customer transactions throughout the year.

Online renewals are processed seven days a week and mailed as quickly as possible. Please allow 7 – 11 business days after you have completed your online transaction to receive your renewed registrations, and new license plates or stickers. You may not receive all registration items in one envelope or on the same day.

Vehicle Emissions Testing

Vehicles registered in Lake and Porter counties are required to undergo emissions tests and tampering inspections every two years from 1976 and newer passenger vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 9,000 pounds or less.

Excise Tax Refunds

If you have moved from Indiana to another state you may apply to receive a refund of any remaining Indiana excise tax on your vehicles.
